What does copyright mean?

Copyright laws are intended to control ownership, use, and distribution of a person’s creative and expressive works. It means that you can get an exclusive right to make copies of your own original work and sell them on the market. For example, a copyright protects against you selling Michael Jackson’s music as if it were your own.

What is Piracy? And how to recognize a Fake or Pirated book

Piracy is the unauthorised reproduction or use of a copyrighted work. This can include copying and distributing the work without the permission of the copyright holder. When it comes to textbooks, piracy can take the form of photocopying pages from a book or downloading an electronic version of the book. Although pirating textbooks or purchasing fake books may seem like a good way to save money, this is illegal! In my mind, I always think about authors who devote countless hours and effort to writing their books only for them to be copied.

There are a few key things to look for when trying to spot a fake or pirated textbook. It is often an earlier, outdated edition; it could have cheap, thin paper; it often will have blurry text and images; it could be off-centre and the colours could be faded or the binding may not be strong. If you’ve ever seen a book on a street corner that looked like it was photocopied or pirated, or maybe even just a badly printed version of a book, that’s what we’re talking about! Poor quality and cheap – it will not last for long!!

At Sunrise Readers, we believe that education should be accessible to everyone—and that includes our stories. That’s why we make every effort to ensure that our readers are authentic, original, genuine and not copies found on street corners. Our readers are printed in full colour on high-quality paper so they look great and feel good in your hands. They have been updated to include technology that kids can relate to and identify with. And they’re still the same great stories they’ve always been: exciting, fun, engaging and packed with life lessons your child will remember forever!

Give your child the chance to be a future leader by being a reader!
